Neil Young has called off his planned free concert in Ukraine, citing concerns over the ongoing war and the changing political climate.
The 79-year-old rocker had announced earlier this month that he intended to launch his ‘Love Earth Tour’ in Ukraine, a country still under Russian invasion since 2022. However, after reassessing the situation, Young decided it was too risky for his crew and equipment.
Young’s Statement on the Cancellation
In a heartfelt message on his website, Young explained:
👉 “Our concert in Ukraine is cancelled. We had a good venue, close to a shelter, but the changing situation on the ground was too much. I could not in good conscience take my crew and instruments into that area. My apologies to all. Ukraine is a great country with a good leader. Slava Ukraini.”
Tour Plans Continue Across Europe and North America
Despite canceling the Ukraine performance, Young’s ‘Love Earth Tour’ is still set to begin in June and July across Europe, before heading to North America in August and September.
The tour will feature:
🎶 A headline slot at Glastonbury Festival in June
🎶 A massive show in London’s Hyde Park as part of BST Hyde Park on July 11
Return to Glastonbury After Initial Boycott
Young had initially decided not to perform at Glastonbury Festival, citing concerns over its corporate influence. However, he later reversed his decision, revealing that misinformation had led him to withdraw.
👉 “Due to an error in the information received, I had decided not to play Glastonbury, which I have always loved. Happily, the festival is now back on our itinerary, and we look forward to playing. Hope to see you there.”
Festival organizer Emily Eavis expressed her excitement about his return, stating:
👉 “Neil Young is an artist who’s very close to our hearts at Glastonbury. He does things his own way, and that’s why we love him. We can’t wait to welcome him back to headline the Pyramid in June.”
Looking Ahead
Although Young’s Ukraine concert won’t go ahead, fans can still look forward to his performances across Europe and North America in 2024.
